If you are planning to immigrate to the United States from Hungary, you must have an official medical evaluation (U.S. Immigrant Visa Medical Exam) completed before the visa interview at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest. FirstMed provides this exam for adults and children, with English-speaking doctors (general practitioners or pediatricians) who have experience conducting these exams. They will assess your (and your family’s) health and prepare all necessary documents in accordance with U.S. regulations.

Schedule your appointment at least 2-3 weeks before the interview to allow enough time for the exam, receive the results, and complete the documentation (however, unforeseen issues may still arise that delay the finalization of your paperwork). To smooth the vaccination process, especially for children, please contact our doctors promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to bring for the U.S. Immigrant Visa Medical Exam appointment?

Please bring the documents listed below for the appointment (for each visa applicant for whom you booked the exam):

The physical exam assesses the eyes, ears, nose, throat, arms, heart, lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes, and skin, as specified for U.S. immigration screening. Note that this may change based on the current requirements, and your doctor may also need additional, specialized exams.

The required laboratory blood tests include gonorrhea and syphilis tests for individuals between the ages of 18-24 (for those between 25-44, only gonorrhea). The doctor may also determine if additional exams are necessary.

To meet the health requirements for the immigrant visa, visa applicants (adults and children) must comply with the U.S. vaccination requirements for immigrants. Please bring your vaccination booklet to your visit. The examining doctor will review your (and your child’s) vaccination history to check whether you meet the vaccination requirements. If you need, you can receive the missing vaccinations at our clinic. We can only issue the medical documentation if the patient has been verified as meeting all vaccination requirements.

Generally, these vaccinations are necessary:
  • For children: In addition to the routine vaccinations in Hungary, children may need hepatitis A and B, MMR (mumps, measles, and rubella) booster shots (for ages 4-11), and meningococcal (from age 11 or if received more than 5 years ago, a booster shot is required).

Due to differences between the American and Hungarian vaccination schedules, children may need to receive 4-5 vaccinations at once during the examination. To avoid this, we recommend contacting our pediatrician as soon as possible to coordinate the timing of administering the necessary vaccinations.

  • For adults (over 18): DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis) (if you haven’t got it in the last 10 years), polio, varicella (if you didn’t receive it during your childhood), Hepatitis-B (above age 60), Pneumococcus (above age 65+), MMR (for those who were born before 1957).
  • Influenza (for everyone above 6 months of age, during the flu season). We recommend getting the current flu vaccine separately as early as possible in the season to give time to build immunity (this typically takes 2 weeks). This foresight can also avoid the inconvenience of administering this at the same time as the other vaccines during the visit.

The exam price does not include the cost of vaccines administered at our clinic; they should be paid for additionally at the time of the visit (at pharmaceutical prices).

1.5 hours

The complete health assessment lasts approx. 1.5 hours and includes a detailed medical exam, lab tests, a chest x-ray, and vaccinations.

Additional time may be required for further exams or screenings based on specific medical requirements set out by the current U.S. immigration law.

Our doctors are fluent in English and Hungarian. If you don’t speak any of these languages, it is your responsibility to make yourself understood with our doctors during the examination, or to bring an interpreter. Otherwise, our doctors may not be able to continue the consultation.

For Ukrainian citizens, Katalin Maximova may be able to help with translation [Phone: +36 30 504 8141]. Note that this is for information purposes only, as she has no connection to the clinic.

The visa medical documents will be prepared after the lab results are obtained. The expected time to receive the exam results is typically 5-10 working days.

In most cases, the immigrant visa process is electronic, so we will transfer the documents directly to the U.S. Embassy. If your case is not electronic, we will prepare the documents on paper, and you can pick them up at our reception and take them to the Embassy.
