Dr. Sophia L. Kálmán
Pediatrician
Dr. Kálmán started her career in pediatrics at János Hospital, then continued at Heim Pál Children’s Hospital, which managed the foster homes and residential institutions in Budapest, where state wards were raised. Here, she was involved in caring for children in state custody, with disadvantaged backgrounds and severe behavior problems.
She lived and worked in the USA and Canada on several occasions. She learned about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in Canada, a field that helps reduce the impact of severe speech impairments. After returning to Hungary, she introduced AAC in Hungary and across the region. She also managed two foundations: the Bliss Foundation, associated with AAC, and the De juRe Foundation, which provided legal protection against discrimination for people with disabilities. Because AAC is an interdisciplinary field, she pursued further studies in psychology, law, and linguistics to deepen her understanding of it.
Drawing on her previous experiences, she is also able to help children with disabilities, such as intellectual, motor, or sensory disabilities, or communication difficulties.
Dr. Sophia L. Kálmán is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught healthcare professionals (e.g., public health nurses, preschool nurses, specialized hospital nurses) and has been involved in the education of physicians, including pediatricians and rehabilitation specialists. She is currently an invited lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Semmelweis University. She held AAC courses at Bárczi Gusztáv Teachers’ College for Special Education (later the ELTE faculty of the same name) for over 30 years, during which she also developed another subject titled Disability as a Complex Social Phenomenon. Her teaching activities were recognized with an appointment as an Honorary Professor at ELTE in 2010 and, in June 2025, with the Hungarian Association of Special Needs Teachers’ Gusztáv Bárczi Memorial Medal for her outstanding work in special education.
Drawing on her research and experiences in Hungary and abroad, she has authored numerous publications, including books, studies, textbook chapters, articles, and educational materials.
