Otoacoustic Emission Testing

As part of our newborn care, FirstMed carries out Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) testing to assess cochlear function and determine whether the baby can hear properly.

Otoacoustic emissions are sounds produced by the cochlea, the part of the ear responsible for hearing, and are used to assess cochlear and auditory nerve health. The Otoacoustic Emission Test (OAE) measures the ear’s response to sound by detecting faint inner ear sounds, helping identify hearing loss. While primarily used for infants and young children, OAE tests can also assess auditory function in adults.

Why is otoacoustic emission testing important for babies?

If a baby cannot hear well, it can affect their learning and speech development.  The otoacoustic emission test is performed on newborns and helps find hearing problems early. Detecting issues early allows for help and treatment.

An early hearing test, such as OAE, is important for identifying hearing loss or deafness shortly after birth, providing the baby with a better opportunity for normal development through hearing aids or other support.

How does the test work?

The examiner places small probes in the baby’s ear. One probe sends sounds, and the other listens for echoes. If the cochlea works well, it produces sounds called emissions.

Is the OAE test painful?

No, the test is painless. Many babies sleep through it comfortably.

Limitations

OAE cannot confirm all hearing problems. If the test shows possible issues, further tests will be needed to be sure.
