What our patients say:

The 8 sessions of shockwave therapy that I have had for my bursitis have expired. I just came from the ultrasound and I can hardly believe it myself, but there is no fluid in the bursa. Gone! It is a fantastically effective treatment! Thank you very much again!

Conditions in which shockwave therapy is not recommended

It’s a therapy that can transform lives but isn’t for everyone. Here are a few contraindications when alternative treatments might be best:

If you have any of these conditions, it’s best to talk with your doctor before starting shockwave therapy. They can help you decide if the treatment is right for you and how to proceed.

Your healing journey with FirstMed

Initial consultation

At FirstMed, we prioritize your well-being.  To achieve the best results with shockwave therapy, our general practitioner or orthopedist will examine you to understand the underlying source of your condition.

  • They will recommend the best treatment and provide a referral, which may include shockwave therapy alone or combined with other physical therapy treatments.
  • The doctor will advise you on the suitability of shockwave therapy and suggest the optimal number of sessions for effective healing.

What happens during the shockwave therapy treatment?

At FirstMed, our highly qualified and experienced physiotherapists use advanced Zimmer shockwave equipment for the therapy. This small, hand-held device resembles an ultrasound therapy machine and produces high-powered sound waves. The energy feels like mild shockwaves sent through the skin to target specific bones, tendons, and muscles, stimulating various healing processes in those areas.

While some discomfort might occur, it is manageable and varies from patient to patient. During treatment, the physical therapist increases the intensity to optimal levels, ensuring your recovery pathway is comfortable and efficient. Our professionals tailor the settings to meet your condition and individual therapeutic needs.

In most cases, shockwave treatment not only reduces symptoms but also achieves permanent healing without the need for surgery.

How many sessions are generally needed for optimal healing?

Shockwave therapy consists of 30-minute sessions at a time. The number of sessions needed will depend on your condition’s severity and symptoms. Patients often notice improvement after the first session, but for lasting relief, usually 5 to 10 sessions are necessary.
