Effective colorectal cancer screening through colonoscopy
Why is colorectal cancer screening important?
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide and the second most common in Hungary. However, by screening, it can be detected early and prevented effectively. Cancerous lesions or polyps can be removed if identified early, unlike other cancers, screening only detects early-stage development.
A colonoscopy is the most effective procedure for detecting and preventing malignant tumors (colon or rectal cancer) by detecting and removing polyps before they lead to serious complications. Colorectal cancer screening is recommended every five years for individuals over 50, or earlier and more frequently if there is a family history of colorectal cancer.
During a colonoscopy, the doctor directly examines the rectum using a flexible tube with a high-resolution camera. This process not only allows for the early detection of inflammation, tumors, polyps, and other abnormalities, but also the removal of precancerous polyps (cancerous growths).
Our expert specialists and modern equipment guarantee accurate and gentle screening procedures.
Put your health first by visiting our state-of-the-art Endoscopy Center if you are over 50 or have a family history of colorectal cancer.
The colonoscopy screening procedure
Gastroenterology consultation
The colonoscopy procedure is preceded by a consultation with our gastroenterologist, who will review your health condition, medical history, and possible complaints. Based on this information, our doctor may recommend a colonoscopy and will inform you about the procedure and the preparations.
Colonoscopy examination
The colonoscopy usually takes about an hour. During the process, our doctor can detect and may remove certain precancerous lesions (e.g., polyps) on the colon's inner surface.
The examination is performed under general anaesthesia, so it is completely painless.
After the exam
After the colonoscopy, you will rest for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Then you can go home with an escort by car.
Our in-house lab processes the tissue sample taken during the examination for further testing, and you will get the results via email.
How is colonoscopy performed, and what is it used for?

A colonoscopy is a detailed examination of the large intestine and the ileum using a flexible tube with a high-resolution camera called a colonoscope.
It allows doctors to detect diseases like ulcers, tumors, and inflammation, as well as evaluate complaints such as bowel disorders and abdominal pain.
Colonoscopy is also crucial for early detection and removal of polyps that could lead to cancer. If necessary, doctors may take a biopsy for further laboratory analysis.
Have colonoscopy performed together with endoscopy
Enhance the effectiveness of gastrointestinal health care by evaluating your upper and lower gastrointestinal tract in one single procedure. At FirstMed, during the same appointment, you can have a combined colonoscopy and endoscopy examination of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine mucosa.
Why consider having a colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time?
Performing colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same appointment not only simplifies the screening process but also improves the chances of preventing severe conditions, helping to improve your overall health.
- The combination of endoscopy and colonoscopy is a key method in detecting the upper and lower alimentary tract and intestinal abnormalities by comprehensive examination of the digestive tract.
- Conditions such as ulcers, polyps, and inflammatory bowel disease can be more effectively identified, allowing early diagnosis and treatment.
- By having both examinations in one visit, you can skip the hassle of scheduling checkups at different times and lessen the anxiety associated with the examinations.
- Have a complete gastrointestinal tract examination at a reduced, combined price.

What our patients have asked about colonoscopy:
How can I book appointment for colonoscopy?
The easiest way to request an appointment is to fill in the form below. We will contact you and respond within one working day.
When is colonoscopy recommended?
If you have a digestive problem, symptom (e.g. bloody stools) or pain, it is highly recommended that you seek medical advice and have it checked. However, from the age of 50, regular colonoscopy (every 5 years) is essential as a preventive measure, even if you have no symptoms. It may also be necessary more often if you have a family history of colon cancer.
Screening can detect the initial stage (e.g., polyps) when there are no symptoms, but it can later develop into a malignant tumor. Detecting symptoms can often indicate an advanced stage when the disease is difficult or impossible to cure. The earlier the lesion is detected, the greater the chance of a cure.
Do I need a referral for a colonoscopy?
A referral is not required, but a preliminary GP check-up is preferable, where
What are polyps and why are they important to remove?
Colon and rectal polyps are harmless clumps of cells that develop on the inner lining of the colon. If left untreated, they can develop into colon and rectal cancer.
80% of colorectal cancers develop from polyps. Removing polyps can significantly reduce the risk of colon cancer, which is why regular colonoscopy is a key preventive measure for people over 50.
When can I have a colon screening appointment?
Preliminary consultation and colonoscopy are usually carried out in the afternoon or early evening on some working days, and it is also possible to have the examination on Saturdays. This means that you may not need to take time off work.
What preparations are needed for a colonoscopy?
Before a colonoscopy, it is essential to undergo a thorough bowel cleansing. This process should be carried out at home, both the day prior and on the day of your scheduled procedure, utilizing bowel-cleansing medication. You are allowed to consume fluids to maintain your energy levels; therefore, complete fasting is not required.
We will provide you with all necessary information in English during the preliminary consultation and via email prior to the examination.
How is colorectal cancer screening done?
Colorectal cancer screening starts with a gastroenterology consultation, where the medical history and any complaints are reviewed.
We will then schedule an appointment with you for a colonoscopy exam, which will occur at a later date. The colonoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia, during a one-hour visit.
After the colonoscopy, you will wait for the anaesthesia to wear off in the comfortable private room next to the examination room. Our doctor will inform you of the results and possible treatment options after the examination.
As the test is performed under general anaesthesia, you must have someone with you to accompany you home, which will require using a car.
Is it possible to have colonoscopy without anaesthesia?
Colonoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia, but it is also possible to have an awake examination by special arrangement. Before and after the anaesthesia, highly trained professionals will ensure your safety. Anaesthesia also guarantees complete anaesthesia to ensure that the colonoscopy is not uncomfortable.
Early detection is the key to avoiding colon cancer. Get a colonoscopy at FirstMed’s state-of-the-art Endoscopy Center, where you’ll find the latest technology and a professional team. Our team is ready to provide expert care and support throughout the entire examination process.
