Nephrology

Introduction to FirstMed’s nephrology practice

Nephrology is a specialty within internal medicine that focuses on the treatment of kidney diseases. A nephrologist or otherwise called, kidney doctor, is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating illnesses related to kidneys.

What issues do our nephrologists treat?

FirstMed’s nephrologists diagnose and manage internal medical disorders that affect the way kidney functions or primary kidney diseases. Our specialists work closely with you, and provide the knowledge you need to manage your health and take proactive steps to ensure optimal kidney function.

Special attention to children in kidney care

Our commitment to patient-centered care extends to the youngest patients, with dedicated pediatric nephrology services available for those in need. Our pediatric nephrologist helps children by diagnosing and managing various acute and chronic kidney-related disorders.

When should you see a nephrologist?

Make an appointment to a nephrologist if you (or your child) experience these symptoms:

  • Have blood or protein in your urine,
  • High blood pressure,
  • Recurrent kidney stone formation, after the urological cares, or
  • In case of a kidney injury.

What kind of kidney diseases do FirstMed’s nephrologists treat?

FirstMed’s nephrologists diagnose and treat a variety of kidney-related disorders, such as

  • Chronic kidney disease,
  • Polycystic kidney disease,
  • Acute renal failure,
  • High blood pressure.
  • Urinary tract infection, and
  • Urinary tract malformation in children.

Our medical team works together to ensure a tailored approach for your specific kidney health needs.

Shall you visit a urologist or nephrologist? What’s the difference?

Both nephrologists and urologists treat kidney problems. While nephrologists focus on diseases that affect the kidney’s functionality, urologists treat structural or anatomical disorders of the kidney and urinary tract.

Your general practitioner, pediatrician or urologist may refer you (your child) to a nephrologist if it seems that the kidney problem is related to a structural or anatomical issue, or in case of a chronic kidney disease.

What to expect from your first nephrology visit?

On the first visit, our nephrologist will discuss your medical history, symptoms, conduct a physical examination, and potentially suggest diagnostic tests to help diagnose the condition and guide treatment on a detailed consultation.

Your health journey is our priority. Get your kidney condition evaluated by FirstMed’s medical experts.
