Surviving and Thriving in Budapest
Often one of the greatest challenges facing expats when they arrive in a new country is to establish a trusted network – the local butcher, a good GP, the nearest hospital, a pharmacy near home, a trustworthy babysitter, a reliable vet, and the list goes on. Sometimes differences in language and culture can be daunting obstacles added to the mix. For most, Hungarian is not by any stretch an accessible language, and for some, Hungarians may seem a little strange at first.
It was for this reason that the ‘Surviving and Thriving’ guide was born. This has been compiled by members of the North American Women’s Association (NAWA) using their experience and expertise living in Hungary. The guide is regularly updated to reflect the ever-changing face of Budapest and provide information that can help anyone who arrives in Hungary to survive those first daunting months navigating an often confusing environment. It is also useful for those who already know their way around, helping them thrive in this beautiful city.
This guide serves a dual purpose – it is a valuable resource for expats and it is NAWA’s primary source of income to fund its many ongoing charitable programs. Currently we are hoping to raise funds to donate special chemotherapy chairs to the oncology department of the Semmelweiss Hospital for the use of women being treated for cancer.
NAWA is dedicated to fostering a sense of community to North Americans and other members of the expat community from all over the world who would like to communicate in English. The association offers a forum for all members to participate with the local community through events and charitable activities, and the opportunity to interact, embrace and learn from the many cultures represented by its membership.
By providing opportunities to connect with others, the association aims to encourage friendship and help members make the most of their stay in Hungary.
Budapest offers innumerable opportunities to engage body and mind. NAWA is here to enrich these experiences. We offer interesting and fun general meetings every month followed by lunch at a different restaurant each time. We have a weekly coffee and chat which is very informal and a great time to get to know other members. There are many activities organised to encourage members to enjoy all the aspects of Budapest and to meet other ladies with similar interests.
